Hub City Passage

9.9 miles normal Easy

Trail Description

This Passage connects USC Upstate with downtown Spartanburg, Converse College, Wofford College, Spartanburg Regional Heart Center, Spartanburg Medical Center, and The SC School for the Deaf and Blind. The trail follows both the very popular Mary Black Rail Trail and the Liberty Trail through miles of greenways, bicycle lanes, and safe, signed sidewalks through the City of Spartanburg. The Mary Black Rail Trail has lots of benches along the paved and flat two-mile section, making it ideal for families with small children. The Mary Black Rail Trail follows the route of the 1849 Spartanburg-Union railroad (now Norfolk Southern). Bikes are available for rent from the B-Cycle station at the trailhead at Henry and Union Streets. The paved Liberty Trail, a bit over 0.5 miles in length, takes users through a garden oasis and next to a cascading stream. The SC School for the Deaf and Blind anchors the southern end of the Trail, where the trail accommodates wheelchairs and includes Braille interpretive signs. Numerous trail spurs and loops offer lots of options for touring Spartanburg. The Chinquapin Greenway is a 1.6-mile trail spur located at the city’s northern gateway where the Palmetto Trail crosses Interstate 585. This greenway is adjacent to a Medical Center Hospice House and provides tranquil respite for patients and families.
